Today, we are excited to announce that you can get logs, platform metrics and platform traces from AWS Lambda directly into Sumo Logic using the new Telemetry API. Through this new integration, Sumo Logic and AWS make it possible to gain enhanced observability, making it easier to monitor your Lambda function.
AWS Lambda Extensions enable Sumo Logic to more easily integrate into the Lambda execution environment to control and participate in the Lambda lifecycle. This new extension reflects our commitment as an AWS Lambda Ready Partner to deliver unified observability to customers who build and operate Lambda functions.
Gain enhanced Lambda observability
The new API offers deep insights into phases of the Lambda lifecycle, including events related to cold start visibility and understanding whether initialization happened normally. It also exposes new spans and metrics, such as durationMs
on the platform.runtimeDone
event, which provides the time taken by Lambda Runtime to execute the code in the function handler.
Speed up the ingestion process
In addition to enhancing observability, this integration enables you to quickly gain visibility into the health and performance of your Lambda functions by enabling you to get your mission-critical AWS Lambda telemetry sent directly to Sumo Logic.
Simplified instrumentation
With Telemetry API, you do not need to use workarounds, including using custom libraries, to forward Lambda function and platform telemetry data directly to Sumo Logic.
Open source code
The Sumo Logic extension is also completely open source and available in our Github repository, so you can review the code before deploying it to ensure that the extension is not doing anything you wouldn’t expect. Furthermore, we welcome you to contribute to this project and add functionality you think would be most useful.
Getting started
The new Sumo Logic extension supports all existing AWS Lambda runtimes that allow for Lambda Extensions and shares the same CPU and memory resources with your AWS Lambda function. To get started with the new Sumo Logic extension, you need to download it from our Github repository and attach it as a layer for your Lambda function. Then, configure a hosted collector to retrieve the data from the extension. For more information, please follow the instructions in our documentation.
