Will a technology not heard of four years ago completely change the Cloud Wars landscape?
Are we going to see enterprises finally make a shift to multi-cloud?
Is AWS Lambda ready for primetime?
Today we released our fourth annual Continuous Intelligence Report on "The State of Modern Applications and DevSecOps in the Cloud.” This year, we identified several interesting threads that could change the game for cloud service platform providers, and forever alter the way businesses build, operate, and secure modern applications.
Six observations from this year’s report:
1. AWS still leads, but multi-cloud gaining steam
We are seeing enterprise adoption and deployments grow 50% year over year. This doesn’t mean that AWS dominance is in danger. It shows that enterprises are starting to consider multi-cloud for flexibility and being best-of-breed.
2. Can Kubernetes break AWS “one cloud dominance?”
Looking at the data, we found only 20% of customers in a AWS-only environment use Kubernetes. Upon further analysis, we identified an upward trend on K8 adoption based on the number of cloud platforms they use, with 86% of customers on all three using managed or native Kubernetes solutions. Should AWS be worried? Probably not. But, it may be an early sign of a level playing field for Azure and GCP--because apps deployed on K8s can be easily ported across environments (on-premise to cloud or across clouds).
3. Enterprises are willing to pay to avoid vendor lock-in
Currently, enterprises adopt only less than 50% of AWS management services (e.g., monitoring and logging). Instead, they opt for third party management services to prevent cloud vendor lock-in, as well as be able to manage and secure non-cloud provider resources.
4. Serverless adoption big bet for AWS
With AWS Lambda usage growing to 35% in 2019 from 12% in 2017, serverless adoption is approaching (if not at) its tipping point. For AWS, this is their big bet in maintaining market dominance.
5. Disruption by open source will have long term implications
With four out of the six tiers of the modern application stack disrupted by open source, organizations need to make sure they can interoperate with cloud infrastructure services and third party commercial SaaS/software. While the entry of Open Source provides continuous choice, it also creates continuous complexity.
6. More security, more noise
The rapid adoption of next gen security services adds complexity and noise, forcing enterprises to implement a single-pane-of-glass solution.
Enterprises need to view Kubernetes and multi-cloud differently
The purpose of this report is to get a unique perspective of the DevSecOps tools and methodologies used within cloud-first organizations as they “lift and shift” or modernize and migrate existing applications to cloud environments. Taking a high level point of view of the report findings, it’s clear that kubernetes and multi-cloud are leading the current state of disruption of the modern application stack.
How and why did we create this report?
Sumo Logic provides its customers running modern application workloads in public clouds (AWS, Azure, GCP) with operational and security visibility of their applications. To serve these customers, we collect millions of events per second of live data from our customers’ full application stack: infrastructure, application components, custom app code, as well as a variety of application services leveraged to manage the application.
This data is derived from 2000+ Sumo Logic customers running applications on cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, as well as, on-premise environments. All customer specific data is anonymized.
Customers use Sumo Logic to manage production applications and underlying infrastructure. Hence, this report provides a snapshot of the production application state.
The Sumo Logic Continuous Intelligence Platform runs on cloud. The experience and expertise of running our massive mission-critical analytics service is also leveraged in this report.
Armed with this knowledge, we can use these trending insights to help our customers create a tailored strategy to build, run, and secure their modern applications in the cloud.
